The eternal plight of the aspiring scholar of Tai history:

The Thai specialists understand that 'Thai' and 'Tai' are not the same, and feel that they are, as such, unqualified to assist you.

The non-Thai specialists do not understand that 'Thai' and 'Tai' are not the same, and tell you to talk to the Thai specialists.

Awesome lecture series [Dec. 2nd, 2012|09:42 am]
So, everyone should watch this series of video lectures about the Early Middle Ages, courtesy of Yale Open Courseware:

...because any professor who writes "We can haz plunder" on the blackboard before the start of a lecture about the barbarian kingdoms is totally worth listening to for 15+ hours of your life, amiright?

Things I do when I'm bored [Sep. 21st, 2011|10:51 pm]

Everyone has something they do when they can't focus on their work. Some people watch TV, play video games, have a beer or a coffee... in the last couple weeks, here are some of the things I've done in this situation.

- Watched TV (Law and Order is a good show for running your brain in power-saving mode rather than shutting it down completely)

- Played games (Roguelikes, for the same reason mentioned above)

- Drunk beer and coffee (Coffee usually, but a beer or two to knock me out right before bed)

- Installed Linux on my computer (This is where it starts to get fun. I do STRANGE things in my breaks)

- Read popular history books on my Kindle (Especially about subjects related to my studies. Cheating?)

- Made maps of the ancient Tai kingdoms (I've got one of northern Thailand right on the eve of King Mangrai's conquest of Hariphunchai)

- Worked on my thesis (Hey, it's not a term paper...)

I know that there's this mysterious point where a "history nerd" becomes a "historian". I don't know what point in the metamorphosis I'm at, but this is definitely happening.

I'm back! [Sep. 18th, 2011|11:57 am]
Sort of... at the encouragement of a friend I have returned here, recalling that it is a much closer community than facebook. And far better for someone in the midst of trying to complete an MA thesis in the course of 5 months.

May take me awhile to get back into the habit of posting regularly, but, here I am, folks!

Haven't posted in over a month - first time since I opened this journal that that's happened - but I have a story too good to not post. So sit back, relax, and allow me to tell you the tale of...

So yesterday I get back and I get online and my friend says, "dude, Obama!", and I'm like, fuck it. I just went to the zoo. That shit was awesome.

And now, over 24 hours later, it hits me like a ton of bricks that George Bush is no longer president.

I've had worse days.

It seems Singapore is in the middle of an anti-glue sniffing ad campaign.

How potentially damaging would it be to my laptop to spray it down with bugspray?

It seems the local ants have set up camp in my keyboard.
